This week in game development: Animation and rocks!

This week, Chris has been working on the animation flow in Unity’s Animator window. It’s been really interesting watching the different animation states-Idle, Pistol Aim, Run-come to life while playing inside the game.

Meanwhile, I’ve been getting creative with rocks in Blender. I started with a simple sphere mesh and tweaked its vertices in edit mode to make different shapes. I found a cool rock texture on Poly Haven to use as a base color and posted a short video on my TikTok page. The feedback and tips from the Blender community were awesome-some suggested that I didn’t really need to sculpt all the rocks by hand, which was a neat insight! Learning from other creators is one of the best parts of this process.

A lot of the assets in the game were curated, since I’m still learning Blender and Unity at the same time, but even choosing filler props and building out spaces is a lot of fun. I leave all the coding to Chris-I’m only familiar with markup languages, not C# (Unity’s scripting language)-so I’m focusing on the art side.

It might be another week or so before the game story script is sent over to the voice actors, but I can already say it reads like an action movie. Using Figma to storyboard the game has been a blast; here’s a peek at the first slide:

This week was mostly about animation, but there’s still plenty to do before the game is ready for quality testing in November. We already have a playable version, but it’s far from polished.

Thank you all for joining us on this journey-we really appreciate your support. We can’t wait to share the finished game with you in December!

Until next Monday,

Warmest regards,

Alice
